Scheme of Examination

  • Preliminary Examination: (Objective Type) for the selection of candidates to the main examination
  • Main Examination: (Essay Type) for selection of candidates to the personality test
  • Personality Test / Interview: For final selection of candidates to various posts/cadres


Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination consists of 2 (two) papers with objective type questions (multiple choice)




Paper –I

General Studies


Paper –II

One Subject selected from the list of optional subjects






  • The question paper would be set both in Kannada and English.
  • The standard of Preliminary Examination is that of degree level.
  • Each paper will be of two hours duration.
  • The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main Examination would be 20 times the vacancies notified for recruitment in the order of merit on the basis of the performance in the Preliminary Examination.
  • There will also be provision for reservation for SC, ST and OBC.


Main Examination

The Main Examination consists of 8 (eight) papers with essay type questions.

Two subjects to be selected from the list of optional subjects. Each subject will have two papers

  • The Examination is of conventional (essay) type.
  • The question papers are set both in Kannada and in English.
  • The marks obtained in compulsory papers (Kannada and English) are of qualifying nature. For qualifying in these papers, a minimum of 30% in each paper and 35% aggregate is required.  The marks obtained in these two papers are not considered for determining the merit for selection.  Candidates who do not secure the prescribed marks in these papers namely, Kannada and English, will not be eligible for personality test and selection.
  • The standard of Kannada and English paper are that of First Language Kannada and First Language English respectively at SSLC Level.
  • The standard of the main examination except (Kannada and English) are that of degree level.


Personality Test

  • The number of candidates called for personality test is at the ratio of 1:5 based on the number of vacancies and the merit list of the main Examination
  • Personality test carries a maximum of 200 marks. 
  • The objective of the Personality test is to assess the personal suitability of a candidate.  The qualities judged at the time of personality test are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion, leadership and intellectual depth of the candidate.

The Candidates will not be allowed to offer the following combination of subjects in the main examinations:

  • Political Science and International Relations and Public Administration.
  • Commerce and Accountancy and Management
  • Anthropology and Sociology
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences
  • Not more than one of  the Engineering Subjects (Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering)
  • Economics and Rural Development and Co-operation
  • Agriculture and Rural Development & Co-operation

Personality Test / Interview

Interview is conducted for candidates qualified in the Main Examination.

Assistant / Junior Assistant Posts

Assistants in the Karnataka Secretariat Service and in the Office of Karnataka Public Service Commission and to the posts of F.D.A. and S.D.A. in all other Departments of State Civil Services.  


Academic qualification

  • For Assistants/First Division Assistants: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from a recognized university
  • For Junior Assistants/Second Division Assistants: Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination or equivalent


Scheme of Examination

  • The competitive examination consists of 2 papers: General English or General Kannada and General Knowledge
  • The maximum marks for each paper would be 150
  • The questions in both the papers are objective multiple choice type.
